Parish and Town Councils are required to adopt a Code of Conduct that sets out rules governing the behaviour of members.
As of May 2007, there is a revised Code of Conduct for parish and town councils and you should have received information from the Standards Board for England
The Code of Conduct covers areas of individual behaviour such as members promoting equality, respecting confidentiality and not abusing their position or misusing the council’s resources. Also, councillors signing up to the code are doing so to say they will not bring the authority into disrepute or to gain advantage for themselves or people they know.
In addition there are rules governing disclosure of interest and withdrawal from meetings where members have relevant interests. Members are also required to record on the public register their financial and other interests.
Tthe model Code of Conduct is available for members of WALC to download from the “Members Publications” page. This page can be reached by logging in.
